Plot ‘Falling grounds’

The story occurs at the end of Ceausescu’s reign, when Romania was undergoing strong repression.

Prof. Vlad, a theoretical physicist at the University of Bucharest, a true defender of Marxism and adherent of dialectical materialism, strongly endorses Marxism, as he considers it to be rooted in facts.
Vlad’s wife, “Ana”, is, just as Vlad, very extreme in her believes; however, Ana is a fervent believer and true defender of the doctrines of the Orthodox Church. A collision course is inevitable!

Novac, Vlad’s good old friend and retired professor, was once himself a strong believer in Marxism. All this changed when Novac’s wife was brutally beaten to death by the Securitate (former Romanian secret police).
Today, Novac is an idealist believing in Divine Order, and asks Vlad to investigate the underpinnings of our universe. Evidently, Vlad, the hardened materialist, isn’t in for that.

One day, Vlad realizes that materialism is illusive and science, as practiced today, doesn’t allow him to go to the bottom of things. Vlad has a breakdown and wants to denounce science altogether.
Novac and Ana believe that ‘Peter’, the Dutch-Belgian scholar and inventor, is the solution to Vlad’s problem, because Peter has developed a new methodology to make scientific sense of the World.

They convince Vlad to invite Peter to Bucharest and travel with Peter through Romania, while changing ideas.

The arrival of Peter in their midst raises suspicion. The Securist “Preda”, assigned with operation BUG, suspects that Peter is an CIA agent who wants to spread capitalist ideas and overthrow Ceausescu’s regime.
Preda’s suspicion solidifies when he realizes that Novac was his school teacher from long ago.

Preda is convinced!

This is not only his opportunity to come to terms with his old mocker ‘Novac’, but also to materialize his dream of becoming nation’s ‘true communist hero’, by cracking down on this dangerous plot. However, stronger forces are at work and the eruption of the Romanian revolution changes everything.
